1) 0:00-2:04 – Reading what’s on The Board

a) Three Main steps of Bible Study

i) Observation- What do I see, what does it say?

ii) Interpretation- What does it mean to the original audience

iii) Application- What difference does it make to me?

(1) Primary- How did or should the original audience apply it?

(2) Secondary- How do we living in the church age apply scripture?

b) Three Levels of Observation

i) Book as a whole

ii) Parts of the whole

iii) Focused Observation

c) Steps for Observing a Book as a whole

i) General Materials

ii) Major Divisions/ Structural relationships

iii) Interpretive Questions

iv) Strategic areas/ key passages

v) Higher Critical Data

vi) Major impressions

2) 2:04-4:50 Methods to Substitute Certain Steps when you don’t have time to do it all on your own.

a) We don’t have time to read the book as a whole

b) We need an Overview- Go to the Free Commentary Constables Notes

i) Read His Introduction – Substitutes for Higher Critical Data Step.

ii) Get a Snap shot of the Book by Looking at his Preexisting Outline for the Book

iii) It also helps with Identifying Major Divisions

3) 4:51- 14:49 General Materials Explained – the materials that make up a house but not the structure itself. Get a general feel. There may be other material present but pick on to get started.

a) General Materials Listed

i) Ideological- ideas – what? –

ii) Geographical- places – where?

iii) Biographical- people – who?

iv) Historical- events – what?

v) Chronological- time – when?

b) Ideological Material Explained using 1 Peter 4

i) Later we Trace the argument flow of the book.

ii) Reading titles in the Bible that are not inspired to get an idea of the argument

iii) Ideally make your own titles or descriptive summaries

iv) Our decision is tentative and preliminary- It gives a place to jump in and start

v) This is practical- you can use titles etc. to jump in when you are witnessing on the spot

vi) The Danger on one hand is the titles or summaries may not be inspired.

vii) The Danger of Being prideful- assuming your observations are definitive.

viii) Every Believer has access to God through prayer and Bible Study

ix) Share the word to internalize the Word. It reinforces their own faith.

x) Spiritual Babes – are helpless. Insecurely attached

xi) Preunderstanding affects the passage we are reading

xii) See how a Book begins – God’s Discipline on the Nation of Israel, a Jewish Christian Context.

4) 15:50 -16:23 Transitional Review –

a) We got an idea about the General Materials

b) We substituted reading sub headings for identifying major Divisions

a) Josh- Warning, Love covering a multitude of sins. He was asking interpretive questions. Commands. He labeled his observations orally.

b) What methods help us Label our Observations?

i) Noticing Words that are structural Markers such as Conjunctions and prepositions

ii) It took Josh a little while to recognize these -key words

iii) Besides reading the Text you can make Observation Sheets

iv) You don’t have to write in your bible.

v) Find the scripture online, print it out, and mark it up.

vi) Action words in Boxes. Main Verbs farthest to the sides- Phrasing

vii) Style and Freedom – Colors, symbols.

viii) It is a study that helps you internalize it since you are writing it down.

ix) In Reading some level of interpretation is involved.

x) The Better You Observe the Better You Interpret the Better you can apply.

xi) Full Blown Interpretation cannot occur in Sunday School not enough time.
